The Root Chakra is your foundation, sense of security, stability, and meter for whether or not your basic needs are met. It is intertwined with gravity, connecting you to your human body and experience. The Root Chakra is the portal to your relationship with your body and the physical structures that keep you safe in the world. It reminds you to stay rooted and present in your body.
The term “grounding” comes from the health of the Root Chakra. A balanced Root Chakra is “rooted” with Mother Earth. If you are not grounded, you cannot manifest quickly or influence energies in higher frequencies. The Root Chakra reminds you to anchor our wisdom received from higher chakras like the Heart, Throat, Third Eye and Crown and to embody the *$%! out of it.

How to Tell if Your Root Chakra is Unbalanced
An unbalanced Root Chakra may cause you to be anxious, nervous, dizzy, or emotionally needy. If blocked you may have low self-esteem, engage in self-destructive behavior, feel spacey all the time, find it difficult to be still, or have a hard time achieving your goals.
Governing your adrenal glands, the Root Chakra is influenced by our fight or flight response and if undernourished, can lead to adrenal fatigue. An unbalanced Root Chakra can also cause bowel issues, sciatica, knee and lower back pain.
If your Root Chakra is too open you may find yourself being overly self-centered, malicious towards others, have irrational fears of dying in car accidents, or overly attached to material items (any hoarders in here?).
The Root Chakra in Balance
When your Root Chakra is in balance, you feel safe and free to move confidently through your life knowing you are supported and seen.
How to Balance Your Root Chakra
The easiest way to balance your Root Chakra and ground yourself is to walk on Mother Earth with bare feet. You can even imagine roots growing from the soles of your feet towards the center of the Earth. If you can’t get barefoot on the ground, just being outside in fresh air should do the trick, too!

The Root Chakra in Your Spiritual Path
The Mother of All, Mother Earth, is a source of long-lasting nourishment and security. As we become adults, we tend to neglect that inner Mother for ourselves, because we are taking care of everyone else as well as our responsibilities. When we can nourish our bodies, spend more time outdoors, and be rooted in the present moment, we allow ourselves more space to assess our thoughts, our reactions, and our own foundation or identity.
The Shadow Side of Mother Earth is the idea of being a victim in our lives. When adulting gets hard, sometimes it’s easy to feel like things are happening TO us. When we can change our mindset and reclaim our power, it helps us create a stronger foundation for growth as our own empowered soul. This sense of security within our own bodies is what is going to help us show up as our best selves and radiate that light to the world.
