Tell me about your mindfulness journey. When did you start focusing on mindset? Why?
My mindfulness journey started very young but only about 6 years ago did it truly begin to sink in. I started because of a terrible relationship that failed the same as everyone before. I still work on being mindful and I do not think journey ever ends, we just become more aware. My most focused word combination for being present is “Live intently.”
How did you begin implementing these tools into your life?
My first tool is my breath. This is what I first learned to control and allow to help begin the process of being aware in any situation. I use this to recenter and focus on everything, seeing the positive outcomes and welcoming the challenges with warmth.
What are your daily mindfulness rituals now?
I currently practice quite a few things daily and throughout the day. I begin each day with self-care routines. Usually, this is the order: stretch in bed, coconut oil pulling, skincare routine w/ my organic vegan skincare, yoga or meditation. Then my day is full of errands, work, and most importantly kids. Throughout the day- taking moments of breathing, moments to focus on something nature- sky, flowers, weather, wind, etc, touching my toes, smiling, being aware of my surroundings, and socializing with compassion. I can honestly say that living a vegan lifestyle has present more opportunities to be more present and mindful.
How has your mindfulness practice changed after having children?
It has actually increased, I feel that it is so important to practice mindfulness even more than before. In order to be the best parent for my kids, I must firstly be my best version of me. It can vary day to day, and its usually when I have free time but the morning routine is always at once.
How has mindfulness affected your parenting?
It has been extremely helpful in keeping stress and anxiety levels down. It helps me maintain times like this better which allows me to focus clearly on the task at hand as well as being a parent. Another wonderful thing is that my kids see my routines and self-care, they want to participate. They want to learn to take after these routines. In taking care of myself I am teaching them by example.
What have you learned about yourself throughout this journey?
A lot. I have learned what it means to sit in my emotions, learn through error and be allowed to have flaws. I have more importantly learned to love myself as I am in the present. Never to compare of judge myself. I learned self-love. and then everything else fell in place after this awareness.
What advice would you give to any mother who thinks she’s too busy to put any energy towards mindfulness?
To take a second a really think about the times you exerted past your limits, not being mindful of this and how that affected their parenting. Too tired to participate in things with your baby? How snappy or short were you? How did your own actions negatively affect your baby emotionally, mentally, or even physically? If the example you display is what your baby may take after, are you okay with this?
Love yourself completely. Take care of yourself first, and I promise your relationship to your kids will flourish. And they, in turn, will grow up to take on this same beautiful routine, they will be truly happy.
